Decorating Classes

These are hands-on, everything provided classes, where each student works on their own cake. At the conclusion of the class students get to take home their very own beautifully decorated cake, cookies, or cupcakes to share with family and friends.

 

Classes are run on request, as well as pre-scheduled dates & times. Most classes are run Sundays during the school term and some school holidays. Get in touch to find out about upcoming classes.

 

All levels are welcomed from beginners to more experienced decorators. If there is anything in particular you have always wanted to learn, let us know and we would be happy to run a once-off class.

There is a minimum number of bookings required for any class to go ahead. If the minimum is not met, Cake Trends will postpone/reschedule the class. You will again be given the opportunity to choose a date that suits you. All bookings close three days prior to session date.

Beginner Fondant Class

Duration: 3-4 hours Location: Plympton Park Participants: 1 - 3

Things that will be covered:

Preparing sponge for ganache.
How to make and store ganache.
Covering sponge with ganache in preparation for fondant.
Tips on best fondant brand, storage and colouring tips.
Covering ganached cake with fondant.
Using ribbon border to finish cake.
Opportunity to ask questions on making fondant cakes.

Vintage Buttercream Class

Duration: 2.5 hours Location: Plympton Park Participants: 2 - 4

Things that will be covered:

Learn how to make, colour, and store buttercream.
Preparing sponge for buttercream.
Covering a sponge with buttercream.
Piping with buttercream.
Learn how to get perfect straight sides
Practising piping techniques using the 5 essential piping nozzles, creating ruffles, swirls, rosettes, shells and more
Tricks and tips to get that professional finish
Opportunity to ask as many questions as you want in regards to making, piping, and storing buttercream cakes.
Take home buttercream recipe.

Advanced Fondant Class

3D Handbag

Duration: 3-4 hours Location: Plympton Park

Things that will be covered:

Carving sponge using templates.
Covering sponge with ganache in preparation for fondant.
Tips on best fondant brand, storage and colouring techniques.
Making edible handbag handles, clasps, strap and zip.
Using impression mats and mounds to achieve a realistic look.
Creating a beautiful abstract edible flower pattern on handbag.
Painting fine detail with silver lustre dust.
Opportunity to ask questions on making 3d fondant cakes.

Pre-requisite: must be experienced working with fondant.

Advanced Fondant Class

Frill Cake

Duration: 3-4 hours Location: Plympton Park

Things that will be covered:

Covering sponge with ganache in prep for fondant.
Tips on best fondant brand, storage and colouring techniques.
Covering cake with fondant.
Creating ombre fondant frills and attaching to cake.
Must know tips on preparing flowers for insert into cake.
Learning the art of arranging flowers and leaves on a cake.
Opportunity to ask questions on making fondant cakes.

Pre-requisite: must be experienced working with fondant.

Advanced Buttercream Class

Duration: 3-4 hours Location: Plympton Park

Things that will be covered:

Learn how to make, colour, and store buttercream.
Carving sponge ready for buttercream undercoat.
Covering a sponge with buttercream.
Applying intricate buttercream pattern on face of cake.
Preparing preserved and fresh flowers so they are safe to put on cakes.
Learning the art of arranging flowers on the cake.
Applying gold plague to finish off cake.
Opportunity to ask as many questions as you want in regards to covering, carving, and storing buttercream cakes.
Take home buttercream recipe.

Cupcake Decorating Class

Duration: 1.5 hours Location: Plympton Park Participants: 3 - 10

Things that will be covered:

How to make, colour, and store buttercream.
Tools required for decorating.
How to best handle a piping bag and some tips that will improve your finished product.
Practice several piping techniques using different tips.
Decorate 6 beautiful, delicious cupcakes.
Opportunity to ask as many questions as you want about making, baking or storing cupcakes.
Take home buttercream recipe.

Gluten free cupcakes are available upon request for an extra cost.

Teddy Cookie Box Class

Duration: 2 hours Location: Plympton Park Participants: 3 - 10

Things that will be covered:

Decorating cookies using fondant and sprinkles.
Using tools like cutters, impression mats, stamps, and modeling tools.
Decorating 10 vanilla cookies to perfection.
Arranging cookies, small chocolate sweets, and preserved leaves to create a beautiful gift box.
Opportunity to ask as many questions as you like about decorating, storing or baking cookies.
You will receive a vanilla cookie recipe (though we only decorate in this class).

Kids Decorating Workshops

You can book your child into a scheduled workshop or book a private birthday party workshop where I come to you with all the tools and ingredients and all the guests get to take home their own beautifully decorated cupcakes.

Great idea for homeschooled groups, church youth groups, kindy groups, and community events.

Note: Maximum of 10 kids per workshop and a minimum of 7.

Age Groups: 5-11, 12-17.

Kids Cupcake Decorating Workshops

Duration: 2 hours Location: Plympton Park or I come to you

Things that will be covered:

Making, colouring, and storing buttercream.
Tools required for decorating.
How to best use a piping bag.
Step-by-step demonstration of piping techniques.
Making small fondant decorations.
Using sprinkles and marshmallows.
Decorate a total of 6 beautiful cupcakes.
First 3 cupcakes will be guided step-by-step.
Remaining 3 cupcakes will be left to the creativity of each child to decorate.
They will each get their own window cupcake box to take their creations home.
Take home buttercream recipe.

Gluten free cupcakes are available upon request for an extra cost.

Kids Cookie Decorating Workshops

Duration: 2 hours Location: Plympton Park or I come to you

Things that will be covered:

Tools required for decorating.
How to best use and store fondant.
Making small fondant decorations.
Using edible markers, dust, and paint.
Using impression mats, letters, and modeling tools.
First 3 cookies will be demonstrated step-by-step.
Remaining 3 cookie will be left to the creativity of each child to decorate.
Take home a vanilla cookie recipe (though we will only decorate in workshop).
